Necessity Housing

Website Accessibility

We build homes for people with disability, so this website has to work for you too. Here's what we've done, and how to tell us when we've got something wrong.

Tell Us When Something Doesn't Work

If a page on this site is stopping you from finding a home, call us and we'll simply do it with you over the phone. You shouldn't have to fight a website to get somewhere to live.

You don't need to know why it's broken or use the right terms. "I can't get past the region dropdown with my keyboard" is a perfectly good report: more useful to us than a standards reference.

What we've built in

How This Site Is Meant to Behave

We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA. We're not claiming a formal audit: what follows is what we've actually implemented, so you can hold us to it.

  • Skip to main contentThe first thing a keyboard reaches on every page is a link past the navigation.
  • Visible keyboard focusWhatever has keyboard focus gets a solid teal outline, three pixels wide.
  • Motion that respects your settingsIf your device asks for less motion, the animations are off, and no content waits on one to appear.
  • Real headings and landmarksProper heading levels, with navigation, main content and footer marked so you can jump between them.
  • Images and plans in wordsPhotographs have text descriptions, and every floor-plan diagram is described in words.
  • Targets you can hitButtons and menu links are at least 44 pixels tall; every other link meets the WCAG 2.2 minimum target size.
  • Text that reflowsPages work at phone width and when you zoom in, without scrolling sideways.

Known gaps

Where We Know We Fall Short

  • Some homes don't have photographs yet. Their pages say so rather than showing a broken image.
  • Video tours play in YouTube's player, so their captions are YouTube's. If a tour you need isn't captioned, ask and we'll describe the home to you.
  • We haven't had an independent accessibility audit. This page is our own assessment of our own work, which is not the same thing.
